TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Emirates, the Dubai-based airline from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singaporean cryptocurrency company Crypto.com. This MoU paves the way for Emirates customers to make payments using Crypto.com's crypto trading platform.
Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, said that this partnership reflects Emirates' commitment to meeting evolving customer preferences and reaching a younger, tech-savvy demographic that prefers digital currencies.
"This strategic move is in line with Dubai’s vision to be at the forefront of financial innovation while at the same time providing our customers with greater flexibility and choice in how they transact with Emirates," he said.
Several Dubai-based companies, including property developers, educational institutions, and major telecommunications firms, already accept cryptocurrencies as payment.
Implementation Slated for 2026
As reported by Emirates.com, this collaboration will become effective in 2026. However, the specific implementation date has not yet been announced by either company.
Following the MoU, Crypto.com and Emirates will work together to introduce this service and launch promotional campaigns to increase awareness and encourage crypto payment adoption.
It remains undecided whether the service will launch on specific routes and markets or through a global rollout. Once operational, all cryptocurrency payments made by customers for ticket bookings will be instantly converted to UAE dirhams using real-time exchange rates at the time of the transaction.
UAE: A Growing Crypto Hub
In recent years, the UAE has emerged as a hub for cryptocurrency companies and has enabled crypto payments. Dubai established the VARA regulatory authority in 2022 to oversee the virtual asset sector. The city also hosts the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) Crypto Center, which accommodates over 650 cryptocurrency companies.
Prior to Emirates, in May 2025, airlines such as Air Arabia had already begun accepting the AE Coin stablecoin, which is backed by the UAE dirham, for flight ticket reservations.
