TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A follow-up autopsy on the body of Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian hiker who died on Mount Rinjani, has revealed that she managed to survive for 32 hours after her initial fall on the hiking route. This fact was announced by her family and forensic experts in Brazil during a press conference on Friday afternoon, July 11, 2025, as reported by local media G1 Globo.
Reginaldo Franklin, a forensic expert with the Brazilian Civil Police, estimated Juliana's time of death by analyzing larvae found on her scalp. "Juliana Marins passed away at noon past 15 minutes past on June 22. She remained alive for approximately 32 hours [after her first fall]," Franklin said.
Two Falls and Severe Injuries
Juliana's sister, Mariana Marins, explained that Juliana fell twice on Mount Rinjani. In her first fall, Juliana slipped 61 meters, hitting a steep wall of rock and sand. "It was a steep wall of rock and sand. She fell from the route to a sheer cliff. The end point of the first fall was about 220 meters," Mariana recounted.
During the autopsy, the forensic team discovered severe injuries, including broken ribs, fractured thigh bones, and serious pelvic fractures with significant bleeding.
"We saw contusions on her skull, causing internal head bleeding. There were wounds on her forehead and rib bones penetrating the lung pleura, leading to a pneumothorax," Franklin revealed. These injuries strongly indicated impact against rough surfaces during her slip.
Cause of Death
According to a Correio Braziliense report, the autopsy concluded that Juliana's direct cause of death was internal bleeding due to organ injuries and severe trauma from heavy impacts. The autopsy document suggested Juliana survived for 10 to 15 minutes after her final fall but was in a helpless and immobile state.
The autopsy process faced challenges because Juliana's body had been preserved with formalin to prevent decay during its transport from Indonesia to Brazil. While her organs appeared pale and nearly bloodless, the preservation actually helped maintain the condition of external wounds and internal organ structures.
Criticism of the Evacuation Response
Juliana was reported to have fallen on June 20, around 5:00 p.m. local time. Mariana mentioned that the national park authorities only contacted Basarnas (Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency) two hours and 23 minutes after the incident, and the SAR team did not depart from base camp until four hours later.
"Eighteen hours after the fall, the Basarnas team managed to descend only 150 meters using a rope, whereas Juliana was 220 meters from the route," Mariana asserted during the press conference.
She added, "Even if Juliana was in the same spot, they still couldn't reach her because they were only able to descend 150 meters." Juliana's last known photo alive was taken on June 21 at 06:59 a.m. Indonesia local time via a drone. At 07:51 a.m., a Spanish tourist saw Juliana before returning to the camping area.
At that time, Juliana was still able to shout for help. However, according to Mariana, civil defense personnel only arrived at the location at 07:50 p.m. Before her second fall, Juliana slipped another 62 meters.
Mariana expressed her disappointment with the slow response of the Indonesian authorities. "We are awaiting the reporting moment. Now, we will see the next steps," she concluded, reiterating that Basarnas was called only after a considerable delay despite the severity of her sister's accident.
