TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A commotion broke out after the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, in the early hours of Monday, July 14. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) coach Luis Enrique and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma were seen pushing Chelsea's forward Joao Pedro.
Chelsea emerged victorious with a 3-0 win over PSG in this heated match. Cole Palmer scored two goals, complemented by one from Joao Pedro.
When Did the Commotion Ensued?
The commotion ensued after the match. Some PSG players-particularly goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Achraf Hakimi-approached Chelsea's forward Joao Pedro near the halfway line. Tension escalated when PSG coach Luis Enrique was seen pushing Pedro, who was already preparing to face Hakimi and Donnarumma.
Pedro fell to the ground due to the incident. The situation worsened with a pushing match involving more players from both teams. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca intervened to separate Donnarumma from the ruckus, while staff and other officials rushed in to stop the confrontation.
What Caused the Commotion?
There has been no statement from players and coaches of both teams. However, signs of tension were evident during the match. A red card was given to PSG's Joao Neves for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair. In total, six yellow cards were issued during the match.
Gestures and exchange of harsh words among players-especially between Hakimi and Joao Pedro, and Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos-exacerbated the escalation and are believed to have triggered the incident that occurred after the match.
Consequences of the Incident
The ruckus led to a 30-minute delay in the awards ceremony. Officials were busy trying to restore order on the field.
This incident is also expected to result in disciplinary action, including possible suspensions and fines for those involved.
Meanwhile, Chelsea clinched their second title at the FIFA Club World Cup. They were also champions four years ago when the competition still used the old format. As for PSG, they failed to sweep all trophies they could get in the 2024/25 season, after previously winning the French League, French Cup, French Super Cup, and Champions League.
