TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The son of Israel's right-wing Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, was injured in a mortar attack allegedly carried out by Hezbollah on Israeli soldiers near the Lebanese border. The attack also wounded eight Israeli soldiers.
In a post on X, Smotrich revealed that his son, Benya Hebron, was injured after shrapnel from a mortar shell penetrated his back and stomach. One of the shrapnel penetrated Hebron's liver and stopped in the wall of the largest blood vessel in his stomach.
As reported by The New Arab, Hebron was rushed to the hospital. Smotrich expressed hope that his son would recover fully and rejoin the Israeli army soon.
Israeli television station Kan first reported the injury on March 6, 2026. Kan said that Smotrich's son was wounded along Lebanon's northern border and was in fair condition. Little is known about Hebron, other than that he was an Israeli soldier in the Golani Brigade.
Hezbollah fighters carried out a series of attacks on Israel and its forces heading towards the occupied Golan Heights and the Haifa region on March 6, 2026. The attacks seriously wounded five soldiers amid a wider cross-border offensive following the joint US-Israeli war on Iran.
Hezbollah launched the attacks on Israel after a 15-month hiatus, in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel had been conducting near-daily attacks on Lebanon prior to the Hezbollah shelling, despite a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah that took effect in November 2024.
Smotrich has strongly supported Israel's latest offensive in Lebanon, which has killed at least 486 people, including dozens of children. He argued the offensive was aimed at permanently securing Israel's northern border by capturing a vast security zone south of the Litani River.
Nearly 700,000 people have been forced to flee from Shiite-majority areas of Lebanon, including the south, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and parts of the eastern Bekaa.
