TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 shaking the Sarmi Regency region of Papua. The BMKG's Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, Daryono, stated that the earthquake, recorded at 12:48 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB), was characterized by a thrust fault mechanism.

"The earthquake that occurred is a shallow tremor caused by activity along the Anjak Mamberamo Fault," he said in a written statement on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Daryono detailed the earthquake's coordinates as 2.18 degrees South Latitude and 138.94 degrees East Longitude. The tremor was located on land, 42 kilometers southeast of Sarmi, at a depth of 16 kilometers.

The earthquake generated shaking in Sarmi that reached a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale of V. At this intensity, the vibration is felt by almost all residents, and many people are awakened. Shaking was also felt in Jayapura with an intensity of MMI III, comparable to the vibration felt when a truck passes nearby.

Daryono confirmed that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami. "As of 1:12 p.m. WIB, BMKG's monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity," Daryono added.

BMKG urged the public to remain calm and avoid being influenced by unverified information. Residents were advised to stay out of buildings if they observed cracks or damage caused by the earthquake, and to check the buildings' stability before re-entering.
