TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the ceremonial signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia at the upcoming ASEAN Summit. This was revealed by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 as reported by CNA.
"[Trump] is looking forward to witness the Thailand-Cambodia peace deal," Mohamad Hasan told reporters at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.
He hopes that the agreement will be signed at the upcoming meeting of ASEAN member state leaders, which will take place in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, on October 26-28, 2025.
"We can call it the Kuala Lumpur Declaration or the Kuala Lumpur Accord, we want to make sure that these two neighbouring countries can come together to make peace and also implement their ceasefire," Mohamad told the media.
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia over undemarcated points along their 817 km land border erupted into deadly conflict for five days in July.
The worst fighting between the two countries in more than a decade killed at least 48 people and hundreds of thousands were displaced on both sides.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has nominated the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising him for the "innovative diplomacy" that ended the conflict.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said last week that he had received a letter from Trump, with the U.S. leader expressing his desire to see the two warring neighboring countries resolve the tension.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN chair, has said that Trump will attend the meeting, but there has been no official confirmation from Washington.
Malaysia facilitated an initial ceasefire on July 28, ending the conflict after sustained peace efforts by Anwar and a phone call from Trump to the leaders of both countries.
Malaysia and the United States will facilitate a broader ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, which requires both sides to clear all mines and heavy artillery from their border, Mohamad said.
On Sunday, the Thai Foreign Ministry said that the foreign ministers of both countries met in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend to discuss the ceasefire, attended by officials from the US and Malaysia.
The East Asia Summit, to be held during this month's ASEAN meeting, will issue a chair's statement instead of a joint statement, as the United States objected to the use of the word "inclusivity," Mohamad added, without elaborating further.
Leaders from all 10 member states of the group and trading partners such as China, Japan, Russia, and the United States will attend the summit.
