Purbaya: Rupiah Weakness Not Tied to Bank Indonesia Leadership Shift

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has urged the public not to jump to conclusions about alleged capital flight from domestic markets following the recent weakening of the rupiah and the appointment of Thomas Djiwandono as Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia.

Speaking at the Bloomberg Technoz Economic Outlook 2026 forum in South Jakarta on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Purbaya dismissed speculation that the government, through the Finance Ministry, was interfering in Bank Indonesia’s monetary policy.

“It is too early to draw conclusions about figures or suggest that the government has infiltrated the central bank. We cannot make such assumptions,” Purbaya said.

He emphasized that monetary policy decisions are made collectively and collegially by Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors, not by any single individual or external party.

According to Purbaya, financial market movements are often driven by short-term sentiment that does not necessarily reflect the country’s economic fundamentals.

He said it would therefore be inappropriate to directly link fluctuations in the rupiah to the appointment of a central bank official.

Addressing the presence of government representatives at Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors Meeting (RDG), Purbaya said the arrangement is clearly stipulated in the Bank Indonesia Law and is a common institutional practice rather than a form of intervention.

He added that the Finance Ministry’s primary responsibility is to maintain consistent and sustainable economic growth. A stronger economic foundation, he said, would improve capital market performance, boost investor confidence, and ultimately help support the rupiah.
