Strong Winds Lash Cibinong, Semarang, and Bali: Data and Causes

4 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns that Jakarta and its satellite cities remain under threat from potential rain and strong winds through today, March 9, 2026. This alert follows a string of destructive wind events reported across various regions over the past several days.

Ida Pramuwardani, BMKG’s Acting Director of Public Meteorology, explained that recent observations show these windstorms occurred at different intervals across the archipelago. In the Pakansari area of Bogor, West Java, violent winds were recorded on February 12, 2026. Viral footage of the incident showed raging gusts amid torrential rain, which ripped the roofs off Pakansari Stadium and local residences, while snapping trees. Local residents were seen panicking as they scrambled for shelter.

Similar scenes of panic and destruction unfolded in Semarang, Central Java, and its surrounding areas on March 3, 2026. Falling trees crushed vehicles on the road, and parking structures collapsed as videos of the havoc circulated online. Ida noted that wind speeds in the region were clocked between 46 and 51 km/h.

Bali was the next to be hit by a windstorm on March 5, 2026. While video evidence suggested the resulting panic and physical damage were not quite as severe as those seen in Cibinong and Semarang, BMKG instruments recorded significantly higher velocities. "Speeds reached 61 to 68 km/h," Ida told Tempo on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

She further clarified that these widespread wind events are generally driven by the activity of Tropical Cyclone Seed 90S, currently hovering around the southern regions of Java and Bali. According to Ida, this atmospheric phenomenon has created a significant increase in air pressure differentials. This gradient drives powerful air currents, which in turn spike surface wind speeds across multiple regions. "This includes parts of Java all the way to Bali," she said.

Meanwhile, BMKG has issued a formal early warning for rain spanning March 8-9, 2026. During this 48-hour window, several Indonesian provinces are expected to endure moderate to heavy rainfall.

Some provinces have been placed on high alert for the potential of heavy to very heavy downpours. As of today, BMKG has also flagged the potential for strong winds in several specific areas, including Banten, Jakarta, East Java, the Bangka Belitung Islands, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi.
