TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) announced that 12 tons of sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium oxide (CaO) were dispersed between August 17–21, 2025, to reduce the risk of extreme rainfall.
The chemicals were released during 15 weather modification flights with a combined flight time of 24 hours and 40 minutes.
“The Jakarta government is committed to reducing the risk of flooding and other impacts from extreme weather,” said BPBD Jakarta Executive Secretary Marulitu in a written statement on Thursday, August 21.
The weather modification effort was carried out by a joint team involving the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Indonesian Air Force.
Seeding operations were conducted over northern Jakarta waters, Bekasi Regency, Karawang, Lebak, Serang, and Indramayu, as well as Bogor, Sukabumi, Cianjur, South Cimahi, Landak, Pandeglang, and Subang.
The team sought to minimize rainfall in Jakarta and surrounding regions, including tidal flooding risks along the northern coast and the Thousand Islands. Since the 80th Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, three flights have been conducted daily, using an average of 800 kilograms of seeding material per flight, Marulitu said.
BMKG’s Director of Weather Modification Operations, Budi Harsoyo, explained that the program was designed to regulate rainfall distribution in Jakarta and its satellite cities.
“The goal is to prevent heavy rain from concentrating in flood-prone areas,” he said.
According to BMKG’s analysis, rainfall was initially concentrated in several inland areas. Following the weather modification efforts, the intensity of rain decreased, and precipitation in Jakarta became more controlled over the past week.
