16 Islamic Organizations Meet with Prabowo to Discuss Worsening Mass Protest in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairpersons and general secretary of 16 Islamic social organizations met with President Prabowo Subianto to discuss the country's situation amid escalating demonstrations across Indonesia.

The chairpersons and general secretary of Islamic social organizations met the head of state at his residence in Hambalang, Sentul, West Java, on Saturday, August 30, 2025. The President was accompanied by several ministers from the Red and White Cabinet, MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani, and the head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Muhammad Herindra.

The General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Central Executive Board (PBNU) Yahya Cholil Staquf said that the religious organization leaders held a dialogue to discuss the country's situation after massive demonstrations in many areas. Tensions rose after a tactical police vehicle ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver, resulting in a fatality.

"We agreed to work together to address the situation and encourage the community to remain calm," said Yahya in a video statement with other organization leaders, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, August 30, 2025.

Gus Yahya, as he is known, stated that the religious organization leaders would hold further meetings with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace.

"Hopefully, from there, there will be something that can be declared as a joint commitment, a mutual agreement between President Prabowo Subianto and Islamic organizations as representatives of the Muslim community in Indonesia," he said.

Meanwhile, the General Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Haedar Nashir stated that the meeting lasted for three hours. He and the organization leaders provided their input and views to Prabowo.

Haedar stated that Islamic organizations, with a long history in the independence of the Republic of Indonesia and the post-independence period, understand well that the unity, integrity, and future of the nation need to be safeguarded.

"We understand democracy and aspirations, but we hope and believe that all the people of Indonesia can use democracy with full responsibility, be wary of contamination by things that lead to violence and actions that undermine the unity and integrity of the Indonesian nation," said Haedar.

According to the official statement from the Presidential Palace, in addition to Yahya and Haedar, the Islamic organization figures present included the Chairman of the Dakwah Council, Adian Husaini; the Chairman of AQL, Bachtiar Nasir; the Chairman of Mathalul Anwar, Embay Mulya Syarief; the Chairman of Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyah, Faisol Nasar Madi; the President of Syarikat Islam, Hamdan Zoelva; the Chairman of the Persatuan Islam Central Executive Board, Jeje Zainuddin; and the Chairman of Al Wasliyah, Masyhuril Khamis.

Then there were the secretaries of the Islamic organizations present, namely, the General Secretary of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board, Abdul Mu'ti; the General Secretary of PBNU, Saifullah Yusuf; the General Secretary of Mathalul Anwar, Babay Sujawandi; the General Secretary of Hidayatullah, Candra Kurnianto; the General Secretary of Syarikat Islam, Ferry Juliantono; the General Secretary of the Persatuan Islam Central Executive Board, Haris Muslim; the General Secretary of PUI, Kana Kurniawan; the General Secretary of IKADI, Khairan M. Arif; the General Secretary of Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyah, Muhammad Halim Bakhabazy; the General Secretary of Wahdah Islamiyah, Syaibani Mujiono; the General Secretary of PERTI, Undrizon; the General Secretary of KBPII, Asep Efendi; the General Secretary of the Dakwah Council, Avid Solihin; and the General Secretary of DPP Al Ittihadiyan, Agus Wicaksono

On Friday night, August 29, 2025, Prabowo paid his respects at the condolences house of Affan on Jalan Tayu, Menteng, Central Jakarta, to convey his condolences. Before Affan's family, Prabowo promised to uphold justice in the case of Affan's passing.

Ojek driver Affan Kurniawan died after being run over by a tactical vehicle of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob). The incident occurred as the police dispersed demonstrators on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the area of Rumah Susun Bendungan Hilir II, Central Jakarta.

The Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo apologized for the incident. He mentioned that this tragedy would be evaluated for police duty. "We will follow up on the incident. I apologize to the victim's family and the entire online motorcycle taxi community for the tragedy that occurred," said Sigit in front of the RSCM mortuary in the early hours of Friday.
