5 Airports Most Prone to Baggage Theft: Heathrow Tops Google Searches

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A suitcase filled with travelers' necessities. But what if it goes missing during the trip? It could happen due to mishandling by airport baggage handlers or intentional theft.

AirAdvisor, a service company that supports passenger air travel claims, has ranked the best and worst airports for baggage handling by studying 53 major airports worldwide. The ranking is based on annual passenger numbers to the airport, average distance from the gate (in minutes), Google searches for 'lost suitcase', poor Yelp reviews, and Google ratings for the airport.

Here are the 5 most vulnerable airports for baggage theft:

1. Heathrow Airport, London

Heathrow Airport in London, England, tops Google searches for lost luggage. For comparison, Heathrow Airport has 14,840 more Google searches on this topic than Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris, ranked second most in the survey.

2. Charles de Gaulle International Airport

This airport in Paris received 44 poor Yelp reviews, the highest of all airports in the survey. Moreover, it takes 26 minutes to walk through the airport to the baggage claim area, making it the longest in the group. Considering that the annual passenger volume at this airport ranks fourth out of the 53 airports surveyed, the baggage claim area is quite disorderly.

3. Dubai International Airport

Dubai International has the highest passenger volume of all the airports in the survey. Every year, more than 92.3 million travelers pass through this airport. There are over 5,000 Google searches for lost baggage and 37 poor Yelp reviews. It takes a 20-minute walk through the airport to the baggage claim area, which could be a chance for thieves to take items from the baggage.

4. Istanbul Airport

The Turkish capital has 79.9 million passengers passing through this airport each year. Istanbul Airport is the fourth most likely to lose your bag. In addition to 22 negative reviews about the airport, there are 3,340 searches for lost baggage each year.

5. Frankfurt am Main International Airport

With 61.6 million passengers traveling through the German airport annually, and 3,170 Google searches for lost suitcases, Frankfurt's main airport is the fifth most likely place to lose a suitcase. In addition to a relatively low Google rating of 3.9, the airport also has 30 poor Yelp reviews.
