TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the year draws to a close, movie theaters in Indonesia are once again buzzing with a diverse lineup of new releases spanning comedy, drama, action, animation, and fantasy. From homegrown productions to international blockbusters, these films offer fresh stories and striking visuals, making them ideal choices for a year-end cinema outing.

If you are looking for viewing recommendations or want to stay updated on what is currently screening, here is a selection of films still playing in Indonesian theaters, each offering a distinct cinematic experience.

Agak Laen: Menyala Pantiku!

This comedy brings together a cross-generational cast, including Bene Dion, Boris Bokir, Indra Jegel, and Oki Rengga, alongside Ariyo Wahab, Jajang C. Noer, Tika Panggabean, Jarwo Kwat, Egy Fedly, Tissa Biani, Priska Baru Segu, Ayushita, and others.

The story follows four hapless detectives who are notorious for bungling their assignments. After a series of failed missions, they are given one final chance to redeem themselves by going undercover at a nursing home to track down a suspect in the murder of a mayor’s child. What follows is a string of chaotic encounters that blend absurd humor with unexpected twists.

Avatar: Fire and Ash

The latest installment in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga features an all-star cast, including Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, and David Thewlis.

Set after the devastating war against the RDA that claimed their eldest son, the film follows Jake Sully and Neytiri as they face a new threat on Pandora.

This time, danger comes from the Ash Clan, a fierce and ambitious Na’vi tribe led by Varang. As tensions escalate, Jake and his family must confront battles that test not only their physical endurance but also their emotional resilience.

Timur

Blending drama and action, Timur stars Iko Uwais alongside Aufa Assagaf, Yasamin Jasem, Yusuf Mahardika, Stefan William, and Amara Angelica.

The film centers on two boys bound by a milk-sibling relationship whose lives are torn apart by circumstance. Years later, fate brings them back together under tragic conditions, no longer as brothers but as adversaries standing on opposite sides of a bitter conflict. Their reunion unfolds into a powerful narrative about loyalty, identity, and the cost of unresolved wounds.

Zootopia 2

Disney’s long-awaited sequel reunites the voices of Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, Idris Elba, Shakira, and Ke Huy Quan.

After solving the biggest case in Zootopia’s history, rookie cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde face an unexpected challenge in their partnership. Ordered by Chief Bogo to attend counseling, the duo barely has time to regroup before being pulled into another citywide mystery.

This time, the chaos is sparked by the appearance of a venomous snake whose presence threatens the fragile harmony of the animal metropolis.

Mertua Ngeri Kali

This Indonesian comedy stars social media personality Bunda Corla alongside Naysila Mirdad, Dimas Anggara, Sophie Navita, and Bonar Manalu.

The film follows Andara, a soap opera writer whose life becomes increasingly complicated after clashing with her overbearing mother-in-law, Donda.

A glamorous widow unwilling to let go of her only son, Raja, Donda’s presence sparks tension when she and Andara are forced to live under the same roof. As generational values collide, an unexpected event pushes both women to reconsider their differences for the sake of the family they share.

From laughter and adventure to emotional drama, these films offer something for everyone to enjoy on the big screen during the year-end holidays.
