5 Java-Sumatra Ferry Routes Prepared for Indonesia's Eid Travel Rush

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said the government has prepared five key sea crossing routes to ease travel between Java and Sumatra during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday season, one of the country’s busiest annual travel periods.

Speaking in Bandarlampung, Lampung, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, Dudy said the Transportation Ministry is coordinating with related stakeholders to ensure smooth operations during the annual “mudik” or mass homecoming exodus.

The five routes are:

• Merak Port in Banten to Bakauheni Port in Lampung

• Ciwandan Port in Banten to PT Wijaya Karya Beton Port

• Ciwandan Port to Bakauheni Port

• BBJ (Bandar Bakau Jaya) Port in Bojonegara to BBJ Muara Pilu

• Krakatau Bandar Samudera Port to Panjang Port

“These arrangements are expected to serve the public optimally,” Dudy said.

He urged port operators to maintain service standards similar to those implemented during the recent Christmas and New Year holiday period, as well as previous Eid travel seasons.

To support operations, the government has requested BBJ Port in Bojonegara to prepare 12 large vessels for vehicle transport. Another 12 vessels have been readied at Ciwandan Port to accommodate crossing passengers and vehicles.

To reduce congestion at Bakauheni Port, a waiting system will be implemented across 10 designated points along nearby toll roads and arterial roads. The system is aimed at preventing overcrowding at the port during peak travel days.

Under the traffic management plan, BBJ Port in Bojonegara will serve large freight trucks classified as Groups VIII and IX. Bakauheni Port will operate without vehicle diversion, while Krakatau Bandar Samudera Port will function as a contingency port if traffic surges beyond projections.

Nationwide Transport Capacity for Eid 2026

Dudy outlined the national transport capacity prepared for Eid al-Fitr 2026 across all modes:

Sea transportation

• 829 vessels nationwide

• Capacity for 3.26 million passengers

• 636 seaports available

Sea crossings (ferry services)

• 255 vessels

• Capacity for 6.1 million passengers and 770,000 vehicles

• 15 crossing routes

• 29 ports

Land transportation (buses)

• 31,345 buses

• 1.2 million seats

• 115 Type A terminals and 62 Type B terminals

Air transportation

• 392 aircraft

• Capacity for 8.2 million passengers

• 257 airports

Railway transportation

• 3,821 train units

• Capacity for 3.58 million intercity passengers

• 2.9 million regional passengers

• 51.5 million commuter passengers

• 668 railway stations
