TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The population of Indonesia reached 288,315,089 people as of December 31, 2025, revealed the Director-General of Population and Civil Registration of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teguh Setyabudi. This number increased by approximately 1.6 million compared to the data from the first semester of 2025.
"Compared to the first semester as of June 30, 2025, the population of Indonesia increased by around 1.6 million," said Teguh in an official statement quoted on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Teguh explained that out of the total population, 145,498,082 were male and 142,816,997 were female. With this composition, the population of Indonesia is still dominated by males.
In terms of regional distribution, Java Island remains the area with the largest population, where 55.81 percent of the Indonesian population resides. The next position is occupied by Sumatra Island with 21.88 percent.
Looking at the religious composition, the majority of the Indonesian population follows Islam, accounting for 87.15 percent. This is followed by Christians at 7.37 percent, Catholics at 3.07 percent, Hindus at 1.66 percent, Buddhists at 0.69 percent, Confucians at 0.03 percent, and believers of other faiths at 0.034 percent.
Teguh also presented data on the population based on marital status. Out of the total population, around 131 million people were recorded as unmarried, 137 million were married, 5 million were divorced, and 14 million were widowed. "This means that in Indonesia, there are more people who are already married or have been married," he said.
In addition, the number of the productive-age population, in the 15-64 age group, is recorded at around 199 million or 69.03 percent of the total population. Teguh stated that this composition indicates that Indonesia is still in a demographic bonus period.
"When we look at the productive-age group of 69.03 percent, we should be grateful. This means that until 2030, there will be a demographic bonus. It's really about how we can optimize this productive age group," he said.
According to Teguh, the release of population data is conducted periodically in accordance with the mandate of Law Number 24 of 2013 concerning Population Administration. Under this regulation, the Directorate General of Civil Registration releases data twice a year, on June 30 and December 31.
