TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that there are currently 99 schools conducting classes in tents due to the impact of the Sumatra disaster. This number includes schools in three regions affected by floods and landslides at the end of November 2025, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
"We report that there are still 99 schools conducting classes in tents or emergency classrooms, some of which have returned to their original schools as the cleaning process has been completed," said Mu'ti during a meeting on the handling of the Sumatra disaster at the House of Representatives (DPR) complex on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
Of the 99 emergency classrooms, 52 are located in Aceh, 21 in West Sumatra, and 26 in North Sumatra. Additionally, Mu'ti also mentioned that 22 schools in Aceh and West Sumatra are still using other educational institutions as temporary shelters.
"Currently, there are 22 schools conducting classes in temporary shelters, especially for schools that were swept away and need relocation," he said.
Mu'ti emphasized that all teaching activities in the three provinces have been ongoing for three months post-disaster. However, he admitted that the teaching process has not been ideal. For example, classes are held in morning and afternoon sessions, but there are not enough desks, so students have to learn on the floor.
Furthermore, Mu'ti revealed that schools in disaster-affected areas are using an emergency curriculum.
Mu'ti explained that a total of 3,073 schools were affected in Aceh, 3,001 of which resumed classes at their original locations. Additionally, 649 schools in West Sumatra were affected, 626 of which are already back in operation. Of the 1,180 schools in North Sumatra, 1,104 have been used again.
