Actors, Filmmakers Worldwide Join Boycott of Israeli Film Groups Linked to Genocide

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 1,300 figures in the global film industry, including Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy, and Cannes winners, announced on Monday that they will no longer collaborate with Israeli film institutions, which they accuse of being complicit in “genocide and apartheid against the people of Palestine.”

The declaration, reported by Anadolu, was signed by hundreds of filmmakers, actors, film workers, and film organizations. In the statement, the signatories stressed that cinema has the power to shape public perception, and they refuse to allow their work to support institutions linked to Israel.

Notable names among the signatories include Olivia Colman, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Riz Ahmed, Tilda Swinton, Aimee Lou Wood, Miriam Margolyes, Ken Loach, Julia Sawalha, and Juliet Stevenson.

In this urgent moment of crisis, where many of our governments are enabling the carnage in Gaza, we must do everything we can to address complicity in that unrelenting horror,” the statement read.

Citing the International Court of Justice’s finding that there is a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza, the group affirmed that the struggle for freedom is “a fundamental moral duty that cannot be ignored.”

The statement also responded to appeals from Palestinian filmmakers, who urged the global industry not to remain silent or dehumanize their people, but instead to take action to help end their oppression.

"We answer the call of Palestinian filmmakers, who have urged the international film industry to refuse silence, racism, and dehumanization, as well as to 'do everything humanly possible' to end complicity in their oppression," they said.

The initiative draws inspiration from Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, a collective that boycotted South Africa’s film industry during the apartheid era. The current signatories pledged not to screen films, attend festivals, or collaborate with Israeli cinemas, television stations, or production companies.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 64,500 Palestinians and devastated much of the territory.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, Israel faces a separate genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
