TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airbnb contributed more than Rp35 trillion to the Indonesian economy in 2024, equivalent to 3.1 percent of the total tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The latest research from Oxford Economics initiated by Airbnb also noted that this activity supported more than 200,000 jobs and contributed Rp7.8 trillion in wages.
Airbnb is driving a tourism revolution in Indonesia by expanding access to tourism opportunities. Through unique accommodations in rarely visited locations, this platform inspires travelers to explore beyond popular tourist destinations.
On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, James Lambert, Director of Asian Economic Consultancy for Oxford Economics, said in a written statement that Airbnb has helped channel tourism expenditures to local communities, supported small businesses, sustained livelihoods, and boosted economic value in various industries.
The report noted that 65 percent of Airbnb guests in 2024 came from abroad, with the majority from Australia, France, and the United States. The remaining 35 percent were domestic tourists. Overall, Airbnb guests' spending in Indonesia reached Rp30 trillion. Of that amount, Rp35,000 out of every Rp100,000 was spent on restaurants, Rp23,000 on shopping, Rp19,000 on transportation, Rp13,000 on arts and entertainment, and Rp10,000 on daily needs.
Airbnb's contribution is also evenly distributed to non-urban areas. More than 25 percent of accommodation spending in 2024 occurred in non-urban destinations, up from 19 percent in 2019. This data confirms a shift in tourist interest to explore broader regions.
Airbnb's contribution to the national economy extends beyond the tourism sector. Oxford Economics research noted that Airbnb activities also injected Rp6.9 trillion into transportation and logistics, Rp5.8 trillion into real estate, Rp5.8 trillion into manufacturing, Rp3.8 trillion into wholesale and retail trade, and Rp3.8 trillion into agriculture.
Territorially, Bali made the largest contribution, with Rp17.5 trillion to the GDP, 112,900 jobs, and Rp3.8 trillion in wages. Other areas also recorded contributions of Rp17.8 trillion, 91,200 jobs, and Rp4 trillion in wages. Although it only absorbed 30 percent of the total Airbnb spending, the contributions of areas outside Bali reached 51 percent of the overall Airbnb GDP impact.
Amanpreet Bajaj, the Airbnb Country Head for Southeast Asia and India, said they are pleased to see Indonesian tourism recover with the help of Airbnb, which brings guests from various countries worldwide. Most Airbnb accommodations are located outside major cities and help spread economic benefits to smaller Indonesian communities. It's amazing how Airbnb supports local business growth, creates jobs, and distributes economic benefits evenly throughout Indonesia.
With a shift in tourist interest to non-urban destinations and contributions evenly spread across various sectors, this research shows that Airbnb is not just an accommodation platform, but also a driver of local economic growth in Indonesia.
