TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Actress Angelina Jolie has stated that as many as 132,000 children in Gaza are at risk of dying due to acute malnutrition and starvation. This number does not include over half a million people facing the threat of famine. The figure could soar to 640,000 by the end of September. This statement was made by the Hollywood actress through a post on Instagram on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
In her post, Jolie shared four slides containing alarming data from a UN agency. The mother of six quoted a statement by UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher, who referred to the Gaza crisis as "a preventable famine allowed to happen through wickedness and indifference." A similar warning was also issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), stating that failure to act now will have irreparable consequences.
Angelina Jolie's Voice and Public Support
In her post, Jolie emphasized that serious warnings from international organizations should prompt real action, not just empty rhetoric. She wrote that human rights are inherent to every human being because of their humanity, not because of their identity or place of residence.
"It is shattering to see that so many innocent lives - and principles so many of us stand by and believe in - are being disregarded in this way," Jolie wrote. She believes that this situation is not a sudden loss of morality, but rather the result of selective patterns in defending human rights.

She considers the suffering of the people in Gaza not accidental, but the result of deliberate political choices. Jolie warned that this neglect will create a new and more dangerous world in which civilians are increasingly vulnerable to attacks ranging from hunger to attacks on hospitals and schools.
UN Security Council Criticism
Without beating around the bush, Jolie condemned the UN Security Council for choosing to ignore this humanitarian crisis. "It is the culmination of the shameless way UN Security Council countries pick and choose which countries to criticise or ignore, and which to help and defend," Jolie wrote. "While the numbers of people forcibly displaced by violence has more than doubled in a decade globally - Sudanese, Syrians, Afghans, Ukrainians, and Palestinians among them," she added.
This strong message received a warm response from the public. Many netizens expressed admiration for Jolie's courage in speaking out. User @noelleshawapainting wrote, "Thank you for speaking up for the voiceless children of Gaza." Even model Mari Fonseca commented, "We need more voices like you." Meanwhile, user @wearthepeace added, "Gaza needs all the voices and attention, as we are witnessing ethnic cleansing right before our eyes," along with thousands of other comments.
Jolie's post adds to her long track record of addressing humanitarian issues. In a simple yet assertive manner, she reminds us that the suffering in Gaza is not just a statistic, but a human story that deserves to be heard and addressed. Jolie seems to emphasize that the suffering of the people in Gaza is not just a political issue, but a real and urgent humanitarian tragedy.
