ASDP CEO Reveals New Trends for Java-Bali Crossings

TEMPO.COJakarta - President Director of state-owned ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, Heru Widodo, spoke about new travel trends. He noted that the crossing flow between Ketapang (Banyuwangi) and Gilimanuk (Bali) is now more balanced.

Heru credits this change to modern work habits. "The 'work from anywhere' policy from December 29 to 31, 2025, allows people to plan trips with more flexibility. This prevents crowds from gathering all at once. It helps ensure the crossing flow stays smooth, safe, and under control," he stated in Banyuwangi on Sunday, December 28, 2025, as reported by Antara.

According to Heru, the Java-Bali route is getting busier as the year ends. Operational data shows the return flow from Java to Bali strengthened starting two days after Christmas. More people are moving toward Bali to celebrate New Year's Eve 2026. This mobility is fueled by the ability to work and travel at the same time.

Data from the Ketapang Post shows high activity on Friday, December 27. There were 226 trips from Java to Bali on that day alone. The total number of passengers reached 26,441 people.

Heru noted that these figures show a slight rise compared to last year. The passenger count increased by 0.1 percent from the previous 26,417 people.

"While this growth is small, it marks the start of the return flow pattern for the New Year," he explained.

Vehicle volume is also on the rise. Records show 6,593 vehicles crossed from Ketapang to Gilimanuk. This is a 1.4 percent increase over last year’s 6,504 units.

"Four-wheeled vehicles dominate with 2,975 units, while 1,686 logistics trucks also crossed. This shows that public travel and goods delivery are moving together at the end of the year," Heru said.

The Secretary of PT ASDP, Windy Andale, provided details on the reverse route. The flow from Bali to Java shows a different trend. Passenger numbers from Gilimanuk to Ketapang hit 27,090 people. This is a small decrease of 0.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

However, the number of vehicles leaving Bali actually went up. "Vehicle numbers rose to 7,530 units. This is a 1.6 percent increase compared to our previous records," she said.

Windy explained that ASDP uses an adaptive plan to handle these shifts. They change the number of active ships based on how many people arrive at the port.

The company is ready for sudden surges in traffic. "In normal conditions, we run 28 vessels. We increase this to 34 vessels when congestion gets high. This helps us minimize queues and keep our service steady," she said.
