ASEAN Chair Proposes More Ceasefire Observers Deployed in Thailand, Cambodia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - ASEAN Chair and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, said his proposal to expand the observer team tasked to monitor the implementation of the Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire is solely aimed at ensuring the continued security and stability in the region.

Anwar, in his statement following the 2025 ASEAN Law Forum in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, expressed that the additional ASEAN observer team is not a form of interference.

He said the current number of ASEAN Interim Observer Team (IOT) members requires a more balanced distribution of resources between the two neighboring countries.

"For example, we have 10 members in Bangkok, but only two in Phnom Penh. So, we need to increase the number. If insufficient, additional personnel can be drawn from defense attachés and embassies, and supported by other teams," said Anwar, as quoted by Antara.

Yesterday, the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Phumtham Wechayachai, rejected the proposal to send more international observer teams to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire at the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Phumtham stated that Anwar had contacted him on Tuesday to suggest the deployment of additional international observers on the grounds that the ASEAN IOT could not carry out the task alone.

On July 28, Thailand and Cambodia reached an agreement to implement an unconditional ceasefire after a special meeting in Putrajaya hosted by the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
