Bali's Digital Silence: Internet Off During Nyepi Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has issued a circular to the Bali Provincial Government to shut down the internet network and cease all broadcasts during Nyepi Day 2025.

"Komdigi has issued a letter to the Bali Regional Government to stop the Internet and TV broadcasts during Nyepi," said the Director-General of Digital Infrastructure at Komdigi, Wayan Toni, when met at Gambir Station, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.This policy will take effect on March 29, 2025, starting at 06:00 WITA (Central Indonesian Time) until the same time the next day. He explained that the control to shut down the network will be handed over to mobile operators in each region. "The control will be in the hands of the operators," said Wayan.

Prior to this, the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, stated that the government had instructed all mobile operators to shut down the telecommunications network during the Nyepi celebration. According to her, this was done in response to the request submitted by the Bali Provincial Government. "This is actually a request from the Bali Provincial Government, and we have coordinated with the relevant parties regarding this matter," said Meutya Hafid in a press conference for the Preparation of the Joint Homecoming Post of 2025 Eid al-Fitr at the Ministry of Komdigi, Jakarta, on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

She mentioned that the temporary cessation of the internet network during the Hindu religious celebration, coinciding with the Eid al-Fitr pilgrimage in the year 1446 Hijri, was a form of religious tolerance. "The temporary cessation for 1 day on Nyepi Day is a form of respect for our brothers and sisters celebrating Nyepi," she said.

Meutya also predicted an increase in internet usage frequency by up to 20 percent due to the nearly simultaneous occurrence of two religious celebrations. "Compared to the daily average users of each operator, the increase can reach up to 20 percent," she added.

Therefore, to ensure smooth service, Komdigi has formed a task force that will establish mobile operator posts at several points. She detailed that there are 35 technical implementation units that will monitor radio frequency spectrum throughout Indonesia, and 5 Integrated Eid Transportation Posts. These will be deployed at various points predicted to be the busiest, namely Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Merak Port, Rest Area KM57, KM62, Gambir Station Jakarta, and Tawang Station Semarang.
