TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 4.7-magnitude tectonic earthquake struck Bekasi, Karawang, West Java, and the surrounding areas on Wednesday evening, August 20, 2025, followed by dozens of aftershocks. According to data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), as of 6:05 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Thursday, 13 aftershocks were recorded. The smallest quake had a magnitude of 1.7 and the largest was 3.9, with only one aftershock felt.

The BMKG's aftershock distribution map shows that the epicenter of the most earthquakes, or eight, was located around the epicenter of the main 4.7-magnitude earthquake in southern Karawang. Four aftershocks were located in southern Bekasi Regency, bordering Karawang.

The first aftershock, with a magnitude of 3.9, occurred on Wednesday evening at 10:39 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.49 degrees South Latitude and 107.24 degrees East Longitude, 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Bekasi Regency, at a depth of 3 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in Karawang, Purwakarta, and Bekasi at an intensity of II-III on the MMI scale, meaning only a few people felt it and caused light hanging objects to sway, causing vibrations similar to a passing truck.

Meanwhile, the main earthquake, measuring M4.7 on Wednesday at 7:54 PM WIB, was felt in Bekasi at an intensity of III-IV on the MMI scale, meaning many people felt it and caused pottery to break, windows and doors to rattle, and walls to make noise.

The earthquake was also felt in Purwakarta, Cikarang and Depok, Bandung, Jakarta, South Tangerang, East Bekasi, Tangerang, Pandegalang, Cianjur, Pelabuhanratu, and Lebak in Banten. The earthquake's epicenter, located on land at a depth of 10 kilometers, was located at coordinates 6.52 degrees South Latitude and 107.25 degrees East Longitude, 19 kilometers southeast of the center of Bekasi Regency.

The earthquake was caused by activity in the West Java Back Arc Thrust, also known as the Baribis Fault. "The epicenter of the 4.7 magnitude earthquake was in the southern segment of the Citarum," said Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency (BMKG), in a statement on Thursday.

Meanwhile, geological analysis by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the epicenter of the 4.7 magnitude earthquake was located on land, with the morphology of the nearby area dominated by plains, undulating terrain, and mountains.

The lithology of this area consists of Tertiary sedimentary rocks, Quaternary volcanic rocks, and Recent alluvial deposits. Weathered rocks and surface sediments have the potential to amplify earthquake shaking. Analysis of earthquake source parameters shows that this earthquake was caused by a thrust fault in the Baribis Fault zone.
