TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 rattled the Bekasi, Jakarta, and Depok areas on Wednesday night, August 20, 2025. In response, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) promptly deployed a team to monitor the situation and assess conditions on the ground.
The BNPB head Suharyanto confirmed that his agency has coordinated with the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies (BPBDs) of Jakarta, Bekasi Regency, Bekasi City, Tangerang, and other affected regions. "Immediate checks will be conducted and reported," he said, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake's epicenter on land, approximately 14 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The magnitude 4.9 tremor was felt significantly across Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta, lasting between one and four seconds.
"The tremor caused a number of residents to rush out of their houses and tall buildings," Suharyanto stated.
As of now, the BNPB has not received any reports of infrastructure damage or casualties. Suharyanto advised the public to remain calm and stay vigilant for potential aftershocks. He noted that the BMKG had already recorded one aftershock with a magnitude of 2.1 at 8:35 p.m. Jakarta time.
The BNPB also advised residents to stay away from cracked or unstable buildings, avoid areas with glass or falling objects, and use stairs instead of elevators in high-rise buildings. "The safety of the public is the top priority," he added.
