TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded dozens of houses in Karawang Regency damaged after a 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook Bekasi Regency on Wednesday night, August 20, 2025.
"As many as 41 houses suffered damage and 111 people were affected," said the Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, in an official statement quoted on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The data was the result of a rapid assessment report conducted by the Karawang Disaster Management Agency. According to on-ground data, material damage occurred in six sub-districts: West Telukjambe District with 6 houses damaged; Pangkalan District with 3 houses damaged; Tegalwaru District with 26 houses damaged; Klari District with 1 house damaged; and Ciampel District with 5 houses damaged.
In addition to residences, the earthquake also caused damage to public facilities in several areas. A hall in Tirtamulya District was damaged in the tremor, as well as a public elementary school in Tegalwaru District, particularly the roofs and walls of its classrooms.
"Meanwhile, a multipurpose hall in the Pangkalan sub-district office also experienced damage to the ceiling," said Abdul Muhari. Despite the 41 damaged houses, Abdul confirmed that no casualties were found.
All 111 individuals also did not evacuate and opted to stay at their respective homes.
According to Abdul, the Karawang BPBD has directly assessed the field conditions together with the local governments. Currently, the most pressing need is the distribution of food and other basic necessities.
