TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cambodia officially nominated President of the United States Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize on Thursday, August 7, 2025. This is in recognition of his role in a recent ceasefire with Thailand.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet submitted the official nomination letter to the Nobel Committee in Norway for President Trump's mediation efforts.

"This nomination reflects not only my appreciation but also the heartfelt gratitude of the people of Cambodia," Hun Manet wrote in the letter, which was sent from Phnom Penh on August 7, 2025, as reported by Anadolu.

He commended Trump's "extraordinary statesmanship" and his commitment to resolving conflicts, noting that he has made "exceptional achievements in de-escalating tensions in some of the world’s most volatile regions."

Recent weeks have seen a deterioration in relations between Thailand and Cambodia, escalating to cross-border airstrikes and rocket attacks over a five-day period that resulted in the deaths and injuries of dozens before culminating in a ceasefire on July 28.

Previously, Trump spoke with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, urging them to end the fighting. He warned that the ongoing conflict could endanger their trade agreements with the United States.

Trump later spoke with them again to congratulate both neighboring countries on the ceasefire agreement. The ceasefire was agreed upon on July 28 and the detailed ceasefire agreement was signed last Thursday.

Hundreds of Nominations for Nobel Peace Prize

As reported by Newsweek, the Nobel Committee in Norway receives hundreds of nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize each year. Any living individual, active organization, or institution can be considered eligible for the award. However, the names of nominees will not be disclosed for 50 years.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised Trump for bringing an end to conflicts involving Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, as well as Egypt and Ethiopia.

In June, Pakistan also announced that Islamabad would recommend Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in achieving a ceasefire with Pakistan, following cross-border missile firings in May.

Then in July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also claimed that he would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in October. Although numerous nominations have been made for Trump, he has also faced mounting criticism, particularly regarding his mediation in the Gaza genocide. He has showcased strong backing for Israel, despite the suffering of the Palestinian people.

He has also not fulfilled his promise to promptly end the Russia-Ukraine war, despite giving a deadline to Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.
