TEMPO.COJakarta - The situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border has been calm for the second consecutive day on Sunday, following a ceasefire agreement between the two countries after nearly three weeks of deadly clashes.

Cambodia's Ministry of National Defense spokesperson, General Maly Socheata, told the press that the conditions at the frontline have remained stable since Saturday afternoon, when the ceasefire officially came into effect, as reported by the official news agency Agence Kampuchea Presse as cited by Antara.

Thai media, Khaosod, reported that the Thai military also confirmed the easing of violence in the border area, although limited movements are still observed at several points.

The ceasefire agreement, signed on Saturday, ended nearly 20 days of armed clashes that resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and forced nearly one million civilians from both countries to flee the disputed border area.

In the agreement, both parties agreed to immediately cease all hostile actions using any type of weapons and committed to avoiding unprovoked firing, troop movements, or maneuvers towards the enemy's positions.

Cambodia and Thailand also agreed to maintain the existing number of troops and not to send additional reinforcements to the border areas to prevent further escalation.

As part of the agreement, Thailand stated it would repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers who have been detained since July, after the ceasefire operates without violation for 72 hours.

The foreign ministers of both countries are scheduled to meet on Monday, December 29, 2025, in a trilateral meeting facilitated by China in Yunnan Province, southwest China, to discuss further steps.

Approximately 99 people were reported dead during the 20 days of clashes since the conflict resumed on December 8, a day after a border incident that injured two Thai soldiers.

Thai authorities stated that 26 soldiers and one Thai civilian were killed in the conflict, while 41 other civilians died as a result of indirect impacts of the battles.

The Cambodian Ministry of Interior reported that at least 31 Cambodian civilians also became casualties in the clashes.

Thailand and Cambodia have a long-standing border dispute that has often led to violence, including a major clash last July which resulted in the deaths of at least 48 people.
