TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, delivered a speech to Southeast Asian leaders at the opening of the ASEAN Summit on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of having “reliable partners who honor their commitments."
This subtle jab was made by Carney amidst tariff threats by the US President, Donald Trump, as reported by CBC News. Trump pledged to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Canadian goods in response to an Ontario government television ad that quoted former President Ronald Reagan's criticism of tariffs.
Carney has yet to respond substantively to this sudden and dramatic unraveling in negotiations.
Speaking on the tarmac in Ottawa about the cancellation of trade talks, he stated that Canada and the United States were making progress at the negotiating table and that his government was ready to resume discussions when the Trump administration was prepared.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister stated that Canada would seek other trading partners and focus on domestic investments.
Carney remained committed to that statement for most of the weekend.
The advertisement aired by the Province of Ontario, Canada, features former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing US tariffs. Trump accused the ad of being misleading and on Thursday threatened to halt trade talks with Canada.
“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10 per cent over and above what they are paying now,” Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform as he flew to Malaysia on Air Force One.
“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” he added.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said they would pull the ad, which ran during the first World Series game on Friday night local time, after the weekend, according to media reports.
The World Series is an annual championship series of Major League Baseball in North America, contested by the American League champion and the National League champion since 1903.
Meanwhile, Trump's threat has sparked strong reactions across Canada, particularly from the industrial and labor sectors.
Lana Payne, the national president of Canada's largest labor union, Unifor, condemned the US's actions on social media, accusing Washington of attempting to weaken Canada's economy and take its resources for the benefit of the US.
"He wants to extort more from us. That's the playbook," Payne said, urging Canada to "use our own considerable leverage" in response.
Canadian media cited analysts saying that behind this ad controversy, there are a series of complex trade frictions, including Canada's recent retaliatory steps against US auto manufacturers reducing their production in the country.
