TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Eddy Soeparno, said climate change can no longer be viewed as a mere environmental issue. During the opening of the 3rd Indonesia Climate Change Forum (ICCF), co-organized by the Emil Salim Institute (ESI) and MPR, Eddy mentioned climate issue is now linked to national development.
"Energy resilience, water, food, and territory are the foundation of national sovereignty. Climate change forces us to adapt and innovate to allow future generations to thrive," said Eddy Soeparno, as quoted from a written statement on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
According to him, MPR is responsible for ensuring that the direction of national development aligns with challenges posed by the global climate crisis. "Our support for ICCF 3 is part of our collaboration to ensure that the resulting policies can protect the people and strengthen national sovereignty," he said.
The forum raised the theme 'Energy Resilience, Water, Food, and Territory in the Era of Climate Change.' This agenda brings together speakers from various sectors, ranging from energy experts, food and water experts, to entrepreneurs, academics, policy makers, and citizen representatives. Some of the topics discussed include transitioning to low-emission energy, sustainable water resource management, food security, and disaster risk mitigation related to climate.
The chairperson of Era Sharaddha Indonesia Foundation and a counselor at the Emil Salim Institute, Amelia F. Salim, said the results of this forum will be drafted into policy recommendations for the government. "ICCF 3 is an important moment to strengthen public awareness and draft real solutions," she said.
The President of the Emil Salim Institute, E. Kurniawan Padma, mentioned that ICCF 2025 is part of the national consolidation process leading up to COP30 in Belem, Brazil. He hoped that this forum would produce joint policies and declarations, representing Indonesia's stance in global climate negotiations.
"This forum is also an important space for young generations and local communities to convey their aspirations, which will be considered for Indonesia's negotiation position in international forums," said Emil.
