TEMPO.CO, Jakarta An earthquake struck Gayo Lues, Aceh, Indonesia, on Sunday night, December 28, 2025. The earthquake, which impacted Aceh Tamiang, an area severely affected by the recent floods and landslides in Sumatra, is recorded by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as the latest earthquake with noticeable tremors.

According to BMKG data, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.9 and occurred at 22:56 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The epicenter was on land, 29 kilometers northeast of the center of Gayo Lues Regency, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt in Gayo Lues at an intensity of III MMI or, if it had occurred during the day, the tremors would have been felt inside the house like a passing truck. The same earthquake tremors were felt in Aceh Tamiang at a scale of II-III MMI. At II MMI, the earthquake vibrations caused light hanging objects to sway.

Earthquakes in Gayo Lues and Aceh Tamiang also occurred on the previous Friday, December 26. The land earthquake measured a magnitude of M3.9, but it occurred during the day, precisely at 14:47. The impact of the II-III MMI vibration spread widely to Langsa.

Yesterday's earthquake was also experienced in Agam, West Sumatra, another area severely affected by the Sumatra floods. The earthquake, which was stronger at M4.7, was recorded by BMKG at 09:11.

The epicenter was on land, 19 kilometers southwest of Bonjol, Pasaman. At a depth of 10 kilometers. "Shallow earthquakes are due to the activity of the Kajay-Talamau Fault," said the Head of the Padang Panjang Geophysics Station BMKG, Suaidi Ahadi, in a written statement shared after the earthquake.

Compared to Aceh Tamiang, the earthquake in Agam was felt more strongly at a scale of III-IV MMI. The same vibration intensity was recorded by BMKG in Pasaman, Pasaman Barat, and Bukittinggi. As a note, at IV MMI, the vibration was felt by many people inside the house and was capable of making windows and doors creak.

Some photos shared with the written statement showed the impact of the earthquake tremors causing cracks in several buildings. The MDMC source of Muhammadiyah, Palembayan Subdistrict, Agam, cited in the statement, mentioned 10 damaged houses.

Until Sunday, December 28, 2025, at 09:33:00 WIB, BMKG monitoring results showed one aftershock earthquake activity with a magnitude of 4.7.Based on data on the BMKG website, the aftershock occurred four minutes after the initial or main earthquake. The impact of the tremor was equivalent, i.e., III-IV MMI in Agam.
