TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of protesters stormed the Jakarta Metro Police headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday afternoon, August 29, 2025, to voice their outrage over police violence during the demonstration the day before.
The protest followed the death of online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol) Affan Kurniawan, who was fatally run over by a Jakarta Metro Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle during Thursday’s demonstration in Central Jakarta.
Tempo’s observation at the scene found that protesters began arriving at the Jakarta Metro Police headquarters entrance around 03:00 PM, most wearing university jackets. By 04:00 PM, protesters had entered the headquarters through the gate facing Senayan.
Some removed the front gate sign reading “Metropolitan Jakarta Raya Regional Police (Jakarta Metro Police)” and spray-painted the word “Killers” on the premises
Police officers stood guard in formation, equipped with shields and helmets. Jakarta Metro Police Deputy Chief Brigadier General Dekananto Eko Purwono met with the protesters and assured them that tear gas and violence would not be used.
The protesters responded that they would remain at the headquarters until the arrival of Jakarta Metro Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri. “There will be no use of violence or tear gas,” Dekananto told the protesters.
The police brutality during the previous day’s demonstration had claimed the life of Affan. He was struck and run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle on Thursday night, August 28, 2025, in the Bendungan Hilir II Flats area of Central Jakarta. Affan was rushed to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) but succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, seven police personnel from Jakarta Metro Police were taken in for questioning. Inspector General Abdul Karim, Head of the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Indonesian National Police, confirmed that the seven police members, Kompol CD, Aipda M, Bripka R, Briptu D, Bripda M, Bharaka Y, and Bharaka D, had been secured.
“They have been secured,” Karim said during a press conference at RSCM on Thursday night.
Jakarta Metro Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri expressed his condolences and apologized for the incident.
“This grief is a learning experience for everyone. I emphasize that we will take action against members who made mistakes and violations during the incident this afternoon,” Asep told the media at RSCM.
