TEMPO.COJakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is urging boat owners and fishermen to be wary of extreme weather as the year comes to an end. "Safety is the top priority when at sea, and there's no need to push oneself if the weather does not permit," said Lotharia Latif, the Director General of Capture Fisheries at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, in a written statement on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

Latif is requesting fishermen to continuously monitor weather information and follow the instructions of harbor masters at fishing ports. He also ensures that harbor masters at all fishing ports are continuously enhancing supervision and safety services for navigation.

Starting from providing the latest weather forecast information, inspecting the completeness of vessel documents, to ensuring the seaworthiness of fishing vessels before heading out to sea.

Furthermore, Latif stated that harbor masters are actively providing direct guidance to fishermen regarding the use of safety equipment and the readiness of fishing vessel crews. The aim, he said, is to minimize the risk of maritime accidents, especially amidst uncertain weather conditions.

During the Christmas and New Year holiday in 2026, Latif mentioned that the operational activities of all technical implementation units (UPT) at ports will continue to run optimally. These services include mooring, loading and unloading of fish, business permit administration, and ensuring fish stocks are available in cold storage as well as fish processing units.

Latif mentioned that this is done to ensure the smooth activities of fishermen, to guarantee the availability of fish stocks, and to support the distribution of fisheries products as the year comes to an end.
