TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several hospitals in Gaza have reported five deaths in a day, including three Palestinian children, due to starvation and severe malnutrition amidst the continued Israeli blockade on the enclave, according to local health authorities.
The number adds to the total deaths due to malnutrition and hunger to 387 people, including 138 children, as reported by WAFA on Sunday and cited by Antara.
Since March 2, Israeli authorities have closed all border crossings in Gaza, causing 2.4 million residents of the territory to suffer from starvation.
Famine has been confirmed in northern Gaza and is expected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis in central and southern Gaza by late September, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
Since the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification issued an early warning earlier this year, 109 deaths caused by starvation have been recorded, which also includes 23 children.
Hospitals in Gaza are still receiving cases of starvation and malnutrition, where medical teams are overwhelmed due to the scale of the crisis. An estimated 900,000 children in Gaza are currently suffering from starvation and at least 70,000 people have reached the stage of clinical malnutrition.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has also warned that the level of malnutrition among children under 5 has doubled during the period of March-June 2025 due to Israel's blockade on Gaza, which is still ongoing.
The number adds to the death toll in Gaza to at least 64,368 people in the Israeli genocide since October 2023 as reported by Anadolu.
A ministry statement mentioned that 87 bodies had been brought to hospitals overnight on Sunday, while 409 people were injured, bringing the total number of injured victims to 162,776 in Israel's onslaught.
The ministry also noted that 31 Palestinians were killed and more than 132 others were injured in Israeli attacks while trying to obtain humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours. Thus, the total number of Palestinian aid seekers killed has reached 2,416, with more than 17,709 others injured since May 27.
The Israeli forces continued their genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and have since killed 11,911 people and injured 50,735 others, thwarting the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that has been in effect since January.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its wars in the enclave.
