TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Wednesday, July 16, the mainstage of Tomorrowland, a Belgian dance megafestival, was destroyed by a major fire. The devastating incident occurred just one day before an estimated 100,000 EDM fans were set to arrive.
The festival’s official website and Instagram confirmed that the “beloved Mainstage has been severely damaged” and described it as a “serious incident and fire.” Although the cause remains unknown, the statement emphasized that no one was injured in the blaze.
Billboard reported that Kay Soesbergen, a witness to the incident, who provides catering at festivals in the Netherlands and Belgium. “I looked [in that direction] and saw a really big [cloud] of smoke coming from the festival area,” Soesbergen told Billboard. “That’s kind of when we were like, ‘Okay, something is wrong.’ But then the fireworks started going off, and we knew it was really bad. Then I got a call from one of my supervisors who told me that it was the mainstage on fire.”
On opening day, Thursday, Tomorrowland was set to feature a full lineup of EDM acts. Despite the damage, the festival will continue as planned.
“We can announce that DreamVille (campsite) will open tomorrow (Thursday, July 17) as planned and will be ready for all DreamVille visitors. All Global Journey activities in Brussels and Antwerp will take place as scheduled,” the statement read.
This week marks the first weekend of the festival, with the second wave scheduled for July 24–27. According to CNA, from Friday onward, Tomorrowland’s first weekend will feature major electronic music stars on the Main Stage and Freedom Stage. Among them are David Guetta, Lost Frequencies, Armin Van Buuren, and Charlotte de Witte.
