Fire in Indonesian Retirement Home Kills 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fire broke out at the Werdha Damai retirement home in Ranomuut Village, Paal Dua District, Manado, North Sulawesi, killing 16 people. The incident occurred on late Sunday, December 28, 2025, around 08:36 p.m. local time.

The head of Public Relations at the North Sulawesi Regional Police, Grand Commissioner Alamsyah P. Hasibuan, confirmed the incident. "The death toll reaches 16," said Alamsyah on Monday, December 29, 2025, adding that the bodies have been evacuated and taken to Bhayangkara Hospital in Manado.

The police are currently identifying the victims.

Alamsyah urges the families of the 16 deceased victims to contact the Ante Mortem DVI Post at Bhayangkara Hospital in Manado, as the coordination is deemed crucial to expedite the victim identification process.

Additionally, the police have also conducted a crime scene investigation at Werdha Damai retirement home. "And gathered information by interviewing witnesses around the location," said Alamsyah in his written statement.

The fire at the Indonesian retirement home was only successfully extinguished around 09:30 p.m. local time, after three fire trucks arrived at the scene.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and the local police are still investigating the precise chronology of the incident that claimed the lives of over a dozen people.
