TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods inundated the New Jersey and New York areas, United States. A flash flood submerged the underground train station in New York City on Monday, July 15, 2025.
As reported by ABC News, two people died in the flash flood in New Jersey, after several major cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were inundated by heavy rain. The flood caused power outages, prompting evacuations on July 14, 2025.
The storm caused flash floods in the metropolitan area from New York City to Washington, DC, leading to road closures and a state of emergency declaration in New Jersey. Officials recorded 15 cm of rain in less than two and a half hours on the night of July 14, said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. He told the reporters that they were crushed last night, on July 15.
Two people died after being swept away in their vehicles in Plainfield, New Jersey, a suburban area about 48 kilometers outside of New York City. Their bodies were found around midnight or early morning.
Videos uploaded to social media showed a New York City subway station being flooded by a raging flash flood while passengers watched from inside the train. Passengers lifted their feet to avoid the rushing water entering the subway cars. In McLean, Virginia, just outside Washington, videos showed flooded train cars.
By Tuesday morning, July 15, 2025, the New York City subway system had resumed full operation. However, some roads remained closed in parts of New York and New Jersey.
Dozens of flights were delayed or canceled at the local airport on Tuesday, including a total of 159 cancellations at Newark Liberty Airport, according to FlightAware data.
Most flash flood warnings and watches had ended in parts of New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania as the rain began to subside. Governor Phil Murphy still enforced a state of emergency in New Jersey. Social media circulated videos showing vehicles still partially submerged in some parts of the states. Residents began cleaning flood-damaged cars.
