Former Superman Actor Pledges to Join ICE as Trump's Deportation Scheme Puts Lives at Risk

Dean Cain, an actor known for portraying Superman on a television show in the 1990s, is set to join the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In an interview with Fox News earlier this week, as reported by CNA, Cain said he has spoken with the agency responsible for carrying out Trump's mass deportation agenda.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, stated on Thursday that Cain will be sworn in as an "Honorary ICE Officer" next month. It is not yet clear what his duties will be as an honorary officer. The 59-year-old Cain told Fox News that he has served as a reserve police officer and a sworn deputy sheriff.

Earlier this week, Cain posted a video on his social media account encouraging others to join the agency. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday that they will be lifting the age limits for new recruits at the agency responsible for immigration enforcement, aiming to expand recruitment following a massive injection of funds from Congress.

In the past decade, Cain has openly expressed his conservative views and supported Trump in three elections. A representative for Cain did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

McLaughlin referred to Cain's starring role in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which aired from 1993 to 1997, in her statement, saying that “Superman is encouraging Americans to become real-life superheroes."

Warner Bros., the studio that released the recent Superman movie, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The film, which has grossed over US$550 million and stars David Corenswet, has become a hot topic among right-wing commentators who have criticized the movie as "woke" after director James Gunn referred to the superhero character as an "immigrant."

Lives at Risk due to Trump's Mass Deportation Efforts

The Trump administration's hardline stance has led ICE agents to frequently use excessive force and make arrests of immigrants, both legal and illegal, in the United States.

ICE reportedly plans to deport migrants with only six hours' notice to countries that are not their country of origin. Deportations can even be carried out without assurance of safety from the receiving country.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons communicated to ICE staff in a recent memo that a Supreme Court decision last month had paved the way for the deportation of immigrants to alternative countries, without diplomatic assurances of protection from torture or persecution, according to a report by The Washington Post cited by NDTV.

Among those affected are thousands of immigrants who may face danger in their home countries or people from countries such as China or Cuba. Both countries are not always willing to accept deportations due to frosty relations with the U.S.

Immigration lawyers have warned that this new policy could endanger thousands of long-term immigrants with work permits and families in the U.S. They could be uprooted and sent to places where they have no family ties or even the same language.

"It puts thousands of lives at risk of persecution and torture," said Trina Realmuto, Executive Director of the National Immigration Litigation Alliance, which opposed the decision in court.

The Trina Realmuto organization sued the Trump administration in March for violating federal law by sending migrants to countries that could potentially endanger them. The lawsuit includes the case of a Guatemalan man who was deported to Mexico, where he was kidnapped and assaulted.
