TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A prominent politician of Ukraine and former parliament speaker, Andriy Parubiy, has been shot dead, officials said, as a search was underway to find his attacker.
Andriy Parubiy, who previously served as the secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, was killed in the city of Lviv on Saturday, as reported by Aljazeera.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office stated that an armed man had fired several shots at Parubiy and killed him "on the spot." The assailant fled, and a manhunt is ongoing, it said.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing as a "horrendous murder" and expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of Parubiy.
“All necessary forces and means are engaged in the investigation and search for the killer,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
He mentioned that Ukraine's Security Service, the country's main internal security agency, is involved in the investigation and "instructed to ensure that accurate, verified information be shared promptly with the public."
Parubiy, 54, was a member of parliament and had served as the speaker of the parliament from April 2016 to August 2019.
He was also one of the leaders of the mass protests in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014, which called for closer ties with the European Union.
Ukrainian officials have not immediately released the possible motive for the fatal shooting.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that finding the perpetrator and establishing the background of the attack is crucial.
“This is a matter of security in a country at war, where, as we can see, there are no completely safe places,” he wrote on Telegram.
Tributes poured in from colleagues in parliament and the government, praising Parubiy's contribution to Ukraine's struggle for sovereignty and independence during the 2013-2014 protest movement.
Former President Petro Poroshenko said on Telegram that his killing was “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine.”
“Andriy was a great man and a true friend. That is why they take revenge, that is what they are afraid of,”he said, praising Parubiy's contribution to building the Ukrainian army.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also described Parubiy as 'a patriot and statesman who made a great contribution to defending the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Ukraine'.
'He is a figure worthy of note in history books,' Sybiha wrote on Telegram.
Gunman Flees on Electric Bike
The shooting took place around midday on Yefremova Street, near Parubiy's residence, according to a correspondent from the Ukrainian Service of RFE/RL at the scene. Law enforcement confirmed that the former parliament member died instantly due to his injuries. The shooter is still at large.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office announced that an investigation into the murder has been launched, and the perpetrator is being sought on charges of intentionally killing the prominent politician.
Authorities found eight bullet casings at the crime scene. Sources told reporters that the shooter was dressed as a delivery courier and fled the scene on an electric bike.
Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, wrote on X that she was “deeply shocked by the terrible murder,” while Geoffrey Pyatt—a former US ambassador to Ukraine—said Parubiy was a "truly historic figure who played a pivotal role in building a democratic and European Ukraine."
Parubiy was a prominent political figure and a key participant in the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine, also known as the Maidan Revolution. He served as the chair of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, from 2016 to 2019.
Additionally, he served as the secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council from February to August 2014, a critical period when fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine and Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula.
