TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has been honored with the 'Commander of the Legion' title by the French Government.
The prestigious award was presented by French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu during an official ceremony at the Hotel de Brienne, the Ministry of Armed Forces of France, in Paris on Monday, July 14, 2025. This signifies France's appreciation for Minister Sjafrie's contributions to strengthening the defense relationship between Indonesia and France.
"With great respect, I received the 'Commander of the Legion' title at an official ceremony yesterday from the French Defense Minister. This award is an important symbol of solid defense cooperation and mutual respect between the two countries. Thank you for this trust and honor," Sjafrie posted on his personal Instagram account on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
The award follows Indonesia's participation as a special guest in the Bastille Day 2025 parade on the Champs-Élysées, Paris. The event saw the Indonesian Contingent of the Patriot II Task Force proudly presented in the military parade, symbolizing the increasingly robust defense partnership between the two nations.
Following the parade, Minister Sjafrie held bilateral talks with Sebastien Lecornu, where he expressed gratitude for the honor extended to Indonesia for its involvement in the French national celebration.
Sjafrie pledged to continue reinforcing the strategic relationship with France, including in defense dialogues, defense industry cooperation, and personnel exchanges between their armed forces. These initiatives are all underpinned by a shared commitment to peace, mutual respect, and regional stability.
The relationship between Indonesia and France is currently at a pivotal point, as both countries are commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties this year. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu had previously visited Indonesia on Friday, January 31, 2025, for a meeting with Minister Sjafrie.
Indonesia and France have collaborated across various defense aspects, including the modernization of defense equipment, defense industry partnerships, education and training programs, and regular dialogue forums, as highlighted by President Prabowo Subianto.
Furthermore, President Prabowo also met with French President Emmanuel Macron. He was welcomed with a state dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris, France, on Monday, July 14, 2025, after being an honored guest at France's national day, Bastille Day, earlier that day.
