France has been facing a huge wildfire—the largest in 76 years—and it was finally under control on the third day, after ravaging more than 16,000 hectares of land.
"The fire is under control," said Lucie Roesch, the secretary general of the Aude prefecture, on Thursday evening, August 7, 2025, local time, as reported by Le Monde.
A few hours earlier, despite slowing down, fire continued to spread with a perimeter reaching 90 kilometers, said Christophe Magny, the head of the local fire and rescue service, to BFMTV on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.
The efforts to tame the fire were hindered by dense vegetation and difficult terrain, Magny said.
So far, one person has been reported dead, two civilians and 11 firefighters were injured, with two of them in critical condition.
The Aude government—the region in southern France most severely affected—also stated that the fire had advanced much slower, but stressed that there was "still a lot of work to be done."
The largest wildfire since 1949 first emerged on Tuesday and quickly expanded within 24 hours. The French weather agency stated that the smoke from the fire could even be seen from space.
Hot weather, strong winds, and low humidity have caused the fire to spread rapidly. More than 2,100 firefighters, specialized firefighting aircraft, and military personnel have been deployed to handle the disaster.
