Gov't: Evacuation of Gazans to Indonesia Not Permanent

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono stated that the relocation of Gaza residents to Indonesia is not permanent. When the situation improves, he said, they will return to Gaza.

He also emphasized that the evacuation is carried out to help children and pregnant women live safely as a humanitarian act.

"Everyone must agree. So, do not frame the Gaza relocation as permanent, but to help our Gaza brethren, orphaned children there," he said in Turkey, as monitored via the YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Sugiono said the evacuation also needs to obtain the approval of several countries with interests in the peace of Palestine.

Therefore, President Prabowo Subianto is set to present the Gaza evacuation plan during his visits to several Middle Eastern countries, where he will also consult on ways to support the Palestinian people.

"All relevant parties, including Palestine, must agree to the proposal and support the initiative. That’s why the President is making these visits; to consult and prepare," Sugiono said.

The results of the consultations with several countries, Sugiono said, will be the final decision of the Indonesian government in evacuating Gaza residents. The evacuation process will follow the agreed-upon mechanism.

"The detailed mechanism will be determined from the results of the consultation," he said.

Sugiono said the Indonesian government is ready to evacuate Palestinians if requested. The evacuation is carried out to help Gaza residents who are facing many problems.

"We are ready to accommodate Gaza residents who need to be evacuated, including those who are injured, orphaned children, children who have experienced trauma, and students," he said.

President Prabowo Subianto previously wanted to evacuate 1,000 Gaza residents to Indonesia. He stated that Indonesia will carry out his plan if it gets the green light and support from all parties, including countries that are currently actively assisting the Palestinian people in Gaza, such as UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan.

"The condition is that all parties must agree to this. Second, they will only stay here temporarily until they recover, and when Gaza is in a condition that allows it, they must return to their places of origin. I think that is the stance of the Indonesian Government," said President Prabowo during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, before departing to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, early Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

"Therefore, I need to consult with the leaders of those regions."

Indonesia has provided humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine in Gaza, including food, medical supplies, medicine, clothing, and clean water. The aid was delivered via Egypt and also airlifted in coordination with the Jordanian Air Force.

In addition, Indonesia deployed its hospital ship, KRI Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat, to anchor for several months in El Arish to treat war victims from Gaza.
