TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi advised travelers to be aware of potential extreme weather conditions expected before Eid al-Fitr 2025. He recommended that the public stay updated on weather forecasts through the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
"I urge the public to be vigilant of potential extreme weather that may occur before Eid al-Fitr," said Dudy in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, as stated in the official Ministry of Transportation announcement.
Dudy also asked all transportation stakeholders across all modes to exercise caution. He called on transportation managers and providers to increase safety oversight. "Inspections of facilities and infrastructure consistently and in accordance with procedures to ensure the safety of public transportation passengers," said the National Mandate Party (PAN) politician.
His warning follows information from BMKG regarding the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a large-scale storm in the Indian Ocean. This storm is moving towards Indonesia and is expected to reach Java Island between March 25-27, 2025, bringing rain.
The Ministry of Transportation's information indicated that hydro-meteorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, strong winds, high waves, and thunderstorms, are possible in these weather conditions. Such events could disrupt travel schedules.
The government anticipated that the peak of the Eid exodus would occur between March 26-28, and the peak return exodus between April 6-7, 2025. The estimated number of people traveling during the peak exodus is around 12.1 million.
A survey by the Ministry of Transportation predicted that the total number of people traveling during this year's homecoming season will reach 146.48 million, representing 52 percent of Indonesia's population.
Most travelers will use land transportation. Specifically, 33.69 million people (23 percent) are expected to use private cars, 24.76 million people (17 percent) will use buses, and 12.74 million people (9 percent) will use motorcycles.
