TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani believes the plan to ban roblox game must come alongside a systematic and sustainable digital literacy strategy. Puan emphasizes that the root of the problem does not come specifically from roblox as a popular game among children.
"Our challenge today is how to equip children with critical skills and protection from an early age amidst the flood of digital content," Puan said in a written statement on Friday, August 8, 2025.
The Chairperson of the Central Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) sees the need for a reform of children's digital literacy amid the proliferation of content often unsuitable for children.
According to Puan, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti's plan to ban digital games like Roblox should be interpreted as a form of protection for the psychosocial safety of children in the digital space.
The popular game Roblox, which has been gaining popularity among students, previously drew attention from Minister Abdul Mu'ti. The Secretary General of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah said the application poses a danger to children. "There is a lot of violence in the game," Mu'ti said on August 4, 2025.
He believes that digital games can trigger juvenile violence in their daily lives, since underage students are not yet able to distinguish between reality and fiction. Mu'ti also believes that the habit of playing games on mobile devices can have a negative impact on students' health.
