TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 120 Israeli settlers entered the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday under police protection. A Palestinian official from the Islamic Waqf, who requested anonymity, as reported by Anadolu, reported that 121 settlers reached the site. The group was split into two sessions, with 59 appearing in the morning and 62 following the Zuhr prayer.
The official stated that the groups entered through the Moroccan Gate on the western wall of the mosque. Israeli police provided security throughout the event. During the visit, the settlers performed worship and Talmudic rituals. The official described these acts as an ongoing violation of the mosque's sanctity.
Since 2003, Israeli police have permitted settlers to enter the Al Aqsa complex despite protests from the Islamic Waqf. This body is the Jordanian-appointed organization responsible for managing the site.
Tensions have increased since late 2022, when far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir became Israel's National Security Minister. Ben-Gvir and other officials have frequently participated in these visits.
The Al Aqsa Mosque is the third-holiest site in the world for Muslims. Jews refer to the plaza as the Temple Mount, as they believe it sits on the site of two ancient Jewish temples.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, home to the Al Aqsa complex, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. In 1980, Israel annexed the entire city, a move the international community has never recognized.
