TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 100 representatives from civil society, government, academia, media organizations, and development partners gathered in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 17, for the launch of the Indonesian Civil Society Organizations (CSO) Network for Advancing Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. The network marks an important milestone in Indonesia's efforts to advance women's roles and leadership in maintaining peace while building momentum in commemorating the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.
The civil society network, initiated by AMAN Indonesia and joined by over 80 civil organizations, has established a governance structure and a five-year roadmap to strengthen and expand Indonesia’s work in the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. It will bolster coordination, advocacy, and knowledge sharing among CSOs that work with peacebuilding, conflict prevention, humanitarian response, and gender-responsive approaches to preventing violent extremism.
“This network is a source of hope for CSOs, providing a shared platform for coordination, mutual learning, and uniting voices. It is not only a space for advocacy, but also for solidarity and hope,” said Ruby Kholifah, country representative of AMAN Indonesia, while highlighting the limited resources CSOs have faced over the years.
Indonesian Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Arifatul Fauzi welcomes the launch, underscoring the role of such civil society networks in consolidating, advocating, and sharing good practices while amplifying women’s voices. She calls for multi-stakeholder collaboration to advance the agenda. “The central and regional governments, civil society organizations, academics, the private sector, the media, and local communities are all part of the pentahelix that must move together," she said.
The event, held on September 17-18, 2025, combines exhibitions, thematic workshops, and interactive discussion sessions to reinforce women's leadership in building peace and resilience across Indonesia.
The launch event also provided a platform for CSOs to showcase grassroots initiatives on indigenous women's leadership, youth narratives and peace, survivor-led gender-based violence response systems, and women's economic resilience in conflict-affected areas.
"Civil society is at the center of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. The knowledge, experience, and community innovations of civil society are essential for building sustainable and inclusive peace,” said Dwi Yuliawati, Head of Programmes at UN Women Indonesia.
"This Civil Society Organization Network will strengthen solidarity, amplify women's voices in policymaking, and ensure that no woman or girl is left behind," she added.
Supported by the governments of Canada, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and the Netherlands, this initiative is part of broader regional and national efforts by UN Women to empower women as peacebuilders and strengthen civil society's contribution to the women, peace, and security agenda.
The Indonesian WPS Network is expected to play a central role in advancing national and regional commitments under the ASEAN Regional Action Plan on WPS and Indonesia's National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (RAN P3AKS), which contribute to peace, stability, and gender equality throughout Southeast Asia.
