TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Member of Commission I of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, Oleh Soleh, has highlighted the positive implications of Indonesia’s nomination for the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026 term.

He said the legislature fully supports this move as a step toward achieving the country’s international goals.

Oleh noted that Indonesia will gain a platform to comprehensively address human rights issues within the country. He emphasized that cases related to Papua and missing persons, among other human rights violations, are frequently discussed at UN meetings.

“Prosecutions of human rights abuses in Indonesia have never stopped,” Oleh told reporters on Friday, December 26, 2025.

He added that Indonesia’s election as UNHRC president could serve as a valuable tool to improve the country’s international image.

“If Indonesia is elected, global trust in the country’s diplomacy will increase,” said the politician from the United Development Party.

Oleh also suggested that Indonesia’s candidacy could strengthen its international position, potentially opening doors for a future permanent seat on the UN Security Council with veto power. “This is because of Indonesia’s large population and its status as one of the largest Muslim-majority countries,” he said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced Indonesia’s nomination for the UNHRC presidency. Foreign Minister Sugiono said the country has already received support from Asia-Pacific nations.

“Indonesia will strive to fulfill this mandate to the best of its ability,” Sugiono stated on Friday, December 26, 2025.

The final selection of the UNHRC president will take place at the UNHRC meeting on January 8, 2026. If Indonesia is elected, the position will be held by the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Sidharto Suryodipuro.

Indonesia currently serves as a member of the UNHRC for the 2024–2026 term, after securing 186 out of 192 votes during the election at UN Headquarters in New York on October 10, 2025. The country has previously held UNHRC membership in 2006–2007, 2007–2010, 2011–2014, 2015–2017, and 2020–2022.
