Indonesia's KKJ Calls on ICC to Probe Killing of Al Jazeera Journalist in Gaza

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Safety Journalists Committee (KKJ) strongly condemns the planned murder of journalists in Gaza by the Israeli military. The condemnation comes after an Israeli missile attack on Sunday, August 10, 2025, that hit the Al Jazeera press tent in front of the main gate of Al Shifa Hospital.

The attack killed seven people, including Al Jazeera's senior journalist, Anas Al Sharif, who was still wearing a press vest. Four other journalists who fell victim were Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. In addition, Mohammed Al Khaldi from the local Sahat media and a Gaza resident named Saad Jundiya also died at the scene.

KKJ urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to conduct a thorough investigation of the event and bring the perpetrators to justice. "This murder is a war crime and part of Israel's genocide against the people of Gaza," said KKJ Coordinator Erick Tanjung, on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Investigations by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) and the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) found that the murder of Anas Al Sharif was not an isolated incident, but a systematic attempt to target Al Jazeera journalists.

"Israel has used three methods against Anas Al Sharif, labeling him a terrorist without evidence, publicly tarnishing his name, and ending his life in a planned attack," said Erick.

KKJ names at least eight Israeli military officers, including IDF Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir and Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar, as responsible in the chain of command for the murder. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also accused of encouraging the strategy of killing journalists as part of the massacre in Gaza.

KKJ calls on the ICC to issue arrest warrants for senior Israeli military officials involved, add the case of journalist murder to the indictment against Netanyahu, and include over 220 journalists killed in Gaza in the investigation.
