Indonesia's Prabowo to Spend New Year in Disaster-Hit Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Presidential Staff Office, Muhammad Qodari, said President Prabowo Subianto will celebrate the 2026 New Year in Aceh. Prabowo is scheduled to review post-disaster handling in Aceh today.

"The President is heading to Aceh and will spend New Year's Eve there with the people of Aceh," said Qodari at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on late Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Qodari has yet to confirm where exactly Prabowo will visit in Aceh, but said he hears the head of state planned to visit Bener Meriah, Aceh.

"But we will cross-check with Pak Teddy (Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya)," he said.

The Deputy House Speaker, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, previously mentioned that Prabowo will review disaster handling in Aceh on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Dasco conveyed this during the coordination meeting of the disaster recovery task force in Aceh, on Tuesday.

"Today's coordination meeting was held in anticipation of the President's scheduled visit to Aceh tomorrow," said Dasco as observed on the DPR's YouTube channel.

The Chair of the Gerindra Party's Central Executive Board said the coordination meeting was conducted to ensure proper use of the 2026 disaster recovery budget.

Based on data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as of Wednesday, December 31, the disaster claimed the lives of at least 1,141 people, with 163 remain missing. BNPB reported that around 395 thousand disaster victims have been displaced. The disaster also resulted in more than 166 thousand damaged houses and thousands of public facilities, health facilities, education facilities, and bridges.

Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto had previously expressed plans to visit disaster areas in Sumatra once a week to monitor disaster relief progress.
