Indonesia's Prabowo to Support Thailand's Bid to Join BRICS

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto stated that the Indonesian government will support Thailand in its efforts to join the BRICS forum (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) by helping to facilitate the process.

“The Indonesian government will assist in facilitating this matter,” said Prabowo after meeting with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at the Government House in Bangkok on Monday, May 19, 2025, according to a statement from the presidential communication team.

During the bilateral meeting, Indonesia and Thailand also agreed to push for a ceasefire in Palestine and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace through the two-state solution framework.

“We support humanitarian aid access and reaffirm the peace process through the two-state solution,” Prabowo said.

The two leaders also discussed the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. President Prabowo expressed Indonesia’s appreciation for Thailand’s role in engaging neighboring countries to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In the area of security and defense, both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in addressing transnational crimes, including online fraud networks, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

They also committed to enhancing maritime security collaboration, counterterrorism efforts, and cybersecurity cooperation. The two governments will expand joint military exercises and defense industry partnerships.

“We will make full use of platforms such as the High-Level Committee and Annual Security Dialogue,” said Prabowo, who also serves as chairman of the Gerindra Party.

President Prabowo is currently on an official visit to Thailand as part of a diplomatic agenda on Monday, May 19, 2025. Following his meeting with Prime Minister Paetongtarn, he is scheduled to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reflecting both nations’ commitment to deepening their partnership. The official visit will conclude with a state luncheon hosted at the Government House.

Indonesia formally joined BRICS on January 6, 2025. The move marks a strategic step for Indonesia to broaden its global economic influence and diversify its strategic partnerships.
