TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 1,242 earthquakes in West Java and surrounding areas throughout 2025, with seismic activity showing a downward trend toward the end of the year.
In December alone, BMKG recorded 79 earthquakes, fewer than in the preceding five months. Monthly figures stood at 106 earthquakes in August, 150 in September, 99 in October, and 108 in November.
Head of the BMKG Geophysics Station in Bandung, Teguh Rahayu, said most earthquakes in the region were shallow, occurring at depths of less than 60 kilometers.
“A total of 1,092 earthquakes fell into this category,” Rahayu said in a statement on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Meanwhile, 149 earthquakes were recorded at medium depths of between 60 and 300 kilometers, while one event originated at a depth of more than 300 kilometers. Earthquake magnitudes ranged from as low as 1.0 to a maximum of 5.3.
BMKG data show that earthquake epicenters on land and at sea were almost evenly distributed. The most frequent locations were in the southern waters of West Java, accounting for 629 events, while three earthquakes were recorded in the northern waters, or the Java Sea. A total of 610 earthquakes were land-based.
Not all earthquakes were felt by residents. Rahayu noted that 117 earthquakes were perceptible to the public throughout 2025.
One of the most notable events occurred on August 20, 2025, at 07:54 PM local time. The magnitude 4.7 earthquake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located at 6.52 degrees south latitude and 107.25 degrees east longitude, approximately 19 kilometers southeast of Bekasi Regency, West Java.
The quake was felt in Bekasi at an intensity of III–IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. Residents in Purwakarta, Cikarang, and Depok reported intensity levels of III MMI, while tremors of II–III MMI were felt in Bandung, Jakarta, South Tangerang, and East Bekasi.
Lighter shaking of II MMI was reported in Tangerang, Pandeglang, Cianjur, Lebak, and Pelabuhan Ratu.
According to data from the Karawang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the August earthquake damaged at least 70 buildings, including 36 houses with minor damage, 29 with moderate damage, and five public facilities.
