TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister of Thailand Paetongtarn Shinawatra have agreed to elevate the bilateral relations between the two countries to a Strategic Partnership. The agreement was reached after Prabowo's visit to the Kingdom of Thailand on Monday, May 19, 2025.

The cooperation also marks a crucial milestone in the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Thailand.

The two leaders highlighted comprehensive bilateral ties, covering security, trade and investment, agriculture and food security, tourism, education, and people-to-people connectivity.

As stated in the official release by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prabowo and Shinawatra reaffirmed the effectiveness of existing bilateral mechanisms, including the Joint Commission Meeting (JC), Security Dialogues, Forums, Working Groups, and High-Level Committees (HLC).

As strategic partners, the two leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening and deepening cooperation in three main sectors.

First, in political and security cooperation, both countries promote collaboration between law enforcement agencies to address transnational crime, cybercrime, and mutual legal assistance.

The two countries also aim to enhance engagement between defense institutions, including defense industry cooperation.

Second, in economic cooperation, Indonesia and Thailand will tighten trade and investment relations, including through the first Joint Trade Committee (JTC) to be held in Thailand in 2025. The two countries will promote food security, Halal industry standardization, tourism collaboration, energy security, green growth, and the digital economy.

Third, in social and cultural cooperation, Indonesia and Thailand will promote education through student and academic exchanges. The two countries also agreed to advance cooperation in science and technology, improve healthcare collaboration, cultural and creative economy, and strengthen people-to-people connections.

Prabowo and Shinawatra also reiterated their joint commitment to the unity, resilience, centrality, and inclusiveness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in promoting peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and its surroundings.

Given the global uncertainty, Prabowo and Shinawatra also agreed on the importance of utilizing the collective ASEAN market size and deepening intra-ASEAN economic integration, enhancing regional economic resilience, and promoting broader partnerships with external partners.

Apart from cooperation within ASEAN, the two leaders also emphasized the importance of mutual support and close coordination in other multilateral forums such as BRICS, OECD, APEC, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the United Nations to address regional and global challenges of common concern.

During the visit, Prabowo conveyed appreciation to the Thai government for the hospitality extended to the Indonesian delegation. Prabowo also extended an invitation to Thailand's PM Shinawatra to visit Indonesia on a mutually agreed date.
